Fluorinated Bottles

Fluorinated Bottles

Fluorinated bottles are plastic bottles made safe through the process of fluorination for the packaging of certain chemical liquids that would otherwise react with plastic. Fluorination bonds fluorine atoms to a plastic’s surface, which creates a permanent protective barrier. Fluorination is usually only done to the outer surface of a bottle but can be applied to both inner and outer surfaces to enhance barrier properties. Following fluorination treatment, fluorinated bottles are less susceptible to permeation, weight loss, discoloration and odor emission. Most importantly, fluorinated bottles are less receptive to paneling, which causes the walls of a bottle to collapse inward when the pressure on the inside of a plastic bottle is less than the outside ambient air pressure. Chemicals that may require fluorinated bottles include: heptane, hexane, pentane, carbon tetrachloride and trimethylbenzene, among others.
