Tongs
Tools used to grip and lift objects instead of holding them directly with hands; available in a variety of shapes and with a range of prong counts for specialized applications including holding crucibles, beakers, or flasks.
Lab tongs are typically shaped to accommodate specific objects, with long handles to keep the user at a safe distance from an object that is heated or may be otherwise hazardous to hold.
- The arms of beaker tongs are shaped to help hold beakers of various diameters. To reduce slippage and to avoid heating the metal tongs, some beaker tong arms are plastic-coated. Typically used to hold beakers that have been heated, the ends of the jaws may also be wrapped or coated with an insulated material.
- Crucible tongs are typically made of metal and have two curved and concave pincers. The arms themselves may also be curved to accommodate the shape of crucibles, flasks, beakers, or other glassware items. Because crucibles are typically heated to very high temperatures, the tongs must also be able to tolerate high heat. In addition, some crucible tongs can be securely attached to the crucible with a locking device for added security. Crucible holders may have other shapes that are suited to specific applications (melting precious metals, for example).
- Julian tongs are made from a single piece of metal that is bent in half and has a sliding bracket to adjust the distance between the jaws.
